Thandiwe Geneviève Bluestar
Born and raised in NYC, I am consistently in search of eccentricity in the mundane.
I largely work in performance, words (the written, the uttered, the conjured), and images (moving and still, digital and analog), which boil down to other mediums which find their way into my practice. It is in nurturing this diverse matrix of artistic interests that I have come to understand them as something collective, inseparable. Characters must be played in order to be written into a novel, scenes must be performed in order to be photographed, sculptures must be embodied in order to become bodies. Each day I perform myself. Each day I am the culmination of a life’s worth of performances.
Harnessing my desire for self-knowing and transfusing it into each medium with which I engage activates a beautiful catharsis. Understanding myself as a medium, a canvas for creation, allows me to directly interrogate the ways that I perform femininity, blackness, docility, love, innocence, rage, and to do so fully and without judgement. I can push an emotion to its limit without consequence, and see what arises.
And through this rhetoric my work abstracts the self, uncovering a multitude of ways to create representational figures that highlight both the universality and individuality of the physical, emotional, and spiritual body.
